Conference: A Metaverse for the Good

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

The metaverse concept is that of a large-scale social environment based on the convergence of virtual and physical reality. Participants can take part in the metaverse through virtual, augmented or mixed reality. They can carry out everyday activities together, ranging from entertainment through to education, business, politics, health or even legal proceedings. At this time the metaverse is more of an idea than a reality, but a number of nascent systems exist, and all the technological components, including solutions involving AI, are available to bring this idea into existence. 

The metaverse may have a profound impact on the way we live, bringing  new beneficial ways of carrying out educational, social and economic activities, but may also introduce problems in the ethical, legal, business, psychological, political and social sphere. There will be opportunities and problems that at the moment we cannot envisage, since each new technology brings with it fundamental changes that are hard to foresee. The mobile phone in conjunction with the world wide web and social media have led to revolutionary changes in society including on the positive side deep connectivity between people, but on the other, a threat to democracy. The immersive nature of the metaverse will have the potential to enhance both the positive and negative impact by an order of magnitude. 

The EMRN is a research group that studies these various aspects of the metaverse concept. The 2024 EMRN conference will feature the EMRN members and their work, but we invite other stakeholders from academia, industry and policy to contribute to the discussion. 

We invite submission of papers and posters, in order to foster new collaborations, and generate new ideas, moving towards a greater chance of envisaging the future. We are also looking forward to exciting and inspiring keynotes and panels that enable a multi stakeholder dialogue. 

By bringing research, industry and policy makers together to engage in an open discussion we can enhance the probability of a ‘metaverse for the good’. 

Papers submitted will be reviewed and will have the possibility of being selected, in an expanded form, for a special issue (a Research Topic) in the journal Frontiers in Virtual Reality. (Arrangements are currently under way to facilitate this). We encourage participation of younger researchers, so there will be special sessions on PhD presentations corresponding to submitted posters.

Hate Speech in the Metaverse

The event will explore the impact of bias and hate speech in extended reality (XR) platforms and discuss ways of prevention.

This presentation will explore the impact of bias and hate speech on social harmony in extended reality (XR) platforms. Drawing on research from psychology, ethics and linguistics we will discuss the language and practices that contribute to bias and hate speech and how they affect individuals and communities. Having examined the ways in which bias and hate speech are propagated in XR spaces, we will then begin to explore a number of ways in which they could be prevented or mitigated.

Danielle Shanley

is a post-doctoral researcher at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. She is currently exploring the ethical implications of immersive environments (which combine advanced technologies such as virtual reality and artificial intelligence). Dani’s expertise is mainly within science and technology studies (STS) and the philosophy of technology, with a particular focus on reflexive, participatory design methodologies (or, responsible innovation), such as social labs and value sensitive design (VSD).

Esen Küçüktütüncü

is a documentary filmmaker, visual artist, and researcher in VR (Virtual Reality) and Clinical Psychology. She completed her Master’s degree in Cognitive Systems and Interactive Media at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and is currently a PhD Candidate at Universitat Barcelona within the Event Lab under the supervision of Mel Slater. Her PhD research focuses on the development of shared virtual environments and virtual agents, tackling conflict resolution and social harmony.

In the shoes of others

Using virtual reality to change perspectives and promote empathy in order to better understand those affected by hate crime

In 2019, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) victim satisfaction surveys showed that just under half of victims of hate were not satisfied with the way police officers were handling their complaints and this needed to be addressed, so project “Affinity” was born. “Affinity”, a collaboration between Mother Mountain Productions CIC (MMP) and Greater Manchester Police, created a 360-3D virtual reality experience that allowed police officers to directly experience hate crime by putting officers literally “in the shoes” of victims, with the aim to increase connection and empathy.

MMP used VR technology to give the Police an immersive experience, so they were able to feel the effect of hate crime on those who experienced it, rather than to just understand it intellectually. An experience was created where officers literally ‘changed places’ with victims and saw the world from their point of view.

Made with the help of the communities affected, the films portrayed real life stories of people who had suffered antisemitism, transphobia and disability hate crime and the project, which concluded early in 2023, has had real impact. Recent data extracted from the responses of officers has given an indication of the power of the immersive experience. Not only have the officers felt that overall they have a better understanding of hate crime over 90%, but 93% stated that they now know what it “ feels” like to be a victim of hate crime. The result that has most impact however is that some 18 months on, 43% of officers have said that they have changed their behaviours when dealing with hate crime as a result of going through the VR experience. This shows the power and effect and lasting impact of immersive VR when related to real life events.

In this workshop, we want to discuss and explore the “Affinity” project together; the VR applications can be tested during the workshop sessions.

Keynote 1: VR Gaming between Democracy Promotion and Right-Wing Extremism: Threats and Potentials for Digital Civil Society

Creating immersive worlds and enabling social interactions between users has long been an integral part of digital gaming worlds. The far right also uses the possibilities provided by video game spaces to network in various places in gaming, to build groups, and to disseminate inhumane content. Platforms such as Roblox, Minecraft, and GTA Online are particularly susceptible to far-right meta-politics. Development and design of virtual realities and the Metaverse must draw on these experiences and think along the threats, but also the opportunities from the gaming world.

Given that many social VR platforms tend to rely heavily on usergenerated content, decisions about the possibilities and limits of influencing the “look and feel” of virtual social spaces are not just technical issues, but important factors in the formation of the political culture of such spaces: decisions about the possibilities of aesthetic participation are also decisions about governance. However, while user safety and protection from digitized violence are recognized as important aspects of shaping inclusive social spaces in VR, the role of their aesthetics in relation to this is less clear to assess. This talk exemplarily outlines the feature sets of some social VR platforms in terms of how they enable, encourage, and control aesthetic co-creation by users and speculates on the influences of different models of content production on the emergence of communities in social VR.

Citizen participation in the metaverse

What can democratic participation in the metaverse look like in concrete terms?

In 2021, Meta Platforms unveiled its vision of the Metaverse, sparking a debate about the future of the digital world. While some see the Metaverse as a promising new environment, others see it as a potential threat to our already polarized world or a place where people take refuge in alternative realities. Echoing the expectations and concerns raised about online social networks in the early 2010s, the question is who will ensure that the Metaverse, should it become “the next big thing,” is a democratic and deliberative space. What can democratic participation in the metaverse look like in very concrete terms? For example, how could cities and municipalities use immersive systems to allow citizens to participate?

Digital participation platforms enable citizens to participate in local decision-making processes, such as urban planning, asynchronously and from any location. At the same time, however, these platforms fail in picking up the broad population. On the one hand, this is due to general barriers to participation processes, and on the other hand to the usability of the digital tools. In different studies, advantages of the use of immersive systems for participatory urban planning could be worked out. This article will present results and discuss how cities and municipalities can use the metaverse to allow their citizens to participate in the further development of their immediate environment. Approaches of digital twins will be presented and at the same time it will be discussed how more inclusive immersive systems can be developed together with different actors in the sense of a democratization of technology development.

Democracy in the Metaverse: Opportunities and risks

Digital kick-off for a new field of research and action: Opportunities and risks of immersive technologies for democracy

The metaverse promises digital freedom and immersive experiences in a whole new form. However, it is unclear whether and how democratic structures and cultures can be implemented in the metaverse. We want to discuss this with you in a three-hour workshop on April 27, 2023. The symposium will take place on Zoom and is the kick-off for a series of events of the research project “Democratic Culture in Immersive Environments”. The events serve to present and discuss new studies and development as well as transdisciplinary networking.
